A couple of evenings later, carolers came to our house on Avon Street and sang to us. Adding Christmas music piped out to the sidewalk made it a magical atmosphere for a child. With the city’s decorations and store Christmas lights it was fairy tale-like. That year, the stores on Magnolia Boulevard held sidewalk sales up and down the boulevard. Celebrity sightings were common, and not an autograph seeker or paparazzi in sight.Ĭhristmas is a special time of year and my first Christmas in Burbank certainly was. In Akron you could often see Jo Anne Worley of “Laugh In” fame shopping.Īnd that was my Burbank back then. Just up the street from Albins Drugs was Albins Toy Store and across the street from Albins Toys was Akron. Somehow we instinctively knew “Opie” and company would appreciate having a quiet lunch in the heart of his real-life Mayberry without strangers bothering them. My friends and I knew who he was, but we never intruded on their lunch. Of all the times I saw them at that counter I never saw anyone bother them. It wasn’t uncommon to run into Ron Howard and his mom having lunch there. Albins was a great gift store with a very nice lunch counter in the back. A short distance from our house on Avon Street was Albins Drugs. Celebrity sightings were one of the city’s best-kept secrets. It wasn’t just the parks and playgrounds that made Burbank so special. The onlookers went nuts as only little kids can, and a wonderful memory was born for me. As the ball left his hands, we all followed its arch and then heard the swish as it went through the metal net of the basket. With just one shot to go, the shooter dribbled the ball a couple times and took the shot. As he stepped to the free-throw line, he made his first shot and proceeded to sink eight more. Shooting first, coach nailed nine out of 10 of his shots and suddenly the bar had been set pretty high. It was impossible for him to not accept the challenge. A best “10-out-of-10” free-throw contest. This afternoon, a fifth-grader who fancied himself a good basketball player challenged the coach to a shooting contest. Our coach was known for his basketball skills, especially shooting free throws. We spent lots of afternoons on that playground, but one in particular really stands out. His job was to issue playground equipment to the children and supervise the playground. The coach was a college student, probably a physical education major working his way through college. Weekdays, Roosevelt Elementary kept its playground open during after-school hours for its students to use — supervised, of course, by a playground coach. The worst that ever happened to us was an occasional ticket from the Burbank Police Department for riding our bikes on the sidewalks.īesides the local park, we also had the option of playing on our school’s playground. If not at the park, we might ride our bikes all over Burbank without worries of gangs, heavy traffic or anything else parents have to contend with today. We would spend all day playing basketball or pingpong in the gym with no fear of anything more than a bruised knee.įor girls, the park offered charm classes where they learned manners and God knows what else. When I was a child, my friends and I could walk to Verdugo Park, alone. I read this question, What does “Swish of skirt” mean? Why is it a sexist expression?, but it doesn't answer my question.Oh, how I miss the Burbank of my childhood. What does swish mean exactly in the context? I can understand what swish means in the context using the definition of Oxford Online Dictionary I quoted at the beginning of this question. The context is Bernadette used her influence to get Penny a sales job at a pharmaceutical company and Bernadette is (kinda) insisting that Penny should read and study the materials (she gave to her) so that Penny can get familiarized with many unknown terms related with the pharmaceutical industry. They'll tell meīernadette: But imagine how impressed they'd be if you showed up Penny: Well, the first few weeks will be all training. Sheldon Cooper: I'm sensing awkwardness, am I right?īernadette: I don't want to be pushy, but you've never done Wolowitz: So, Penny, when's the new job start?īernadette: Did you get a chance to look over the materials I gave I have just watched the Big Bang Theory, Season 8 Episode 2, and the following conversations take place. It sounds like a great shot in basketball that doesn't touch anything at all. According to Oxford Online Dictionary, the word swish means among other things:īasketball, informal: a shot that goes through the basket without
